Hunter-Gatherer Ecology

Spring 2007

Midterm Study Guide

1.  Discuss the relevance (or lack thereof) of hunter-gatherer studies to contemporary anthropology.  Use specific examples to support your argument.

2.  What are some of the major anthropological stereotypes that have been used to characterize hunter-gatherers?  How have these changed since the early 1960s? Use specific examples to support your argument..

3. Discuss the relationships between environmental parameters and observations on hunter-gatherer behavioral variation.  What role  do you see behavioral ecology  playing in attempts to help understand this variation?  Are there other approaches that you think might be more appropriate?  Use specific examples to support your argument.

4. How would you begin research to dimensionalize hunter-gatherer behaviors? Use specific examples to support your argument.

5. Compare and contrast gender roles, child rearing practices, and resource access among hunter-gatherers.  What could this range of behaviors tell us about basic issues of “human nature?”  Use specific examples to support your argument.
